Botox & Fillers
lips3

Is there anything you should do (or avoid) prior to a treatment?
It is best to avoid taking Aspirin, Advil or Ibuprophen and fish oils for a few days prior to having fillers or Botox/Xeomin done to minimize bruising. Contact our office for any further information.

Are there any possible side effects?

With Botulinum Toxin Type A you may get bruising at the site of the injections. Some people get a headache for a few hours afterwards. Some people can get flu-like symptoms which last up to 1 week but it is very rare.

A very small percentage of the population do not achieve any change and the treatment simply does not work for them, we can’t predict who these people will be prior to treatment. We will not inject anyone who is breast feeding or pregnant. There are some medical conditions where you shouldn’t have treatment also but that can be discussed with your injector. With fillers, most are hyaluronic acids that are naturally occurring in the body, so the only side effects you are likely to experience are possible bruising and swelling in the area.

What’s the difference between Muscle Relaxers and dermal fillers?

Muscle relaxers as Botox, Xeomin or Dysport are used for relaxing the muscles on the face, and for minimising frown lines. Dermal fillers are quite different; they’re used for when people lose volume in their face and need plumping up to look more youthful. Fillers are also used for lip augmentation treatments.

Kiss small lips goodbye

There are many reasons why you would want lip enhancement including:

  • Restoring lost volume and shape
  • Correcting downturned lips
  • Replacing lost moisture, to hydrate lips
  • Filling in upper lip lines
  • Redefining the lip border
  • Correct high smile line/gummy smile

You are a good candidate for lip augmentation or lip enhancement if you have one or more of the above concerns.  See below for more about each problem area.
At your consultation appointment, we will discuss the various techniques used to achieve a good outcome.

You want fuller, more luscious lips
By injecting filler directly into the lips, volume is instantly increased and results can last up to 6 months or more. The lips are the most likely to look injected, however to look natural, the lips should be shaped and not just filled. Shaping takes into account the current lip shape and border, along with the fullness of the upper and lower lip and the proportion of the lips in relation to other features. A true master will do more than simply make the lips fuller, a master will make the lips look better. Dr. Bauer who has an esthetic vision as well as a European background is focused on having a natural look with any enhancements.

You have downturned lips
Some women complain that the corners of their lips turn down, especially the upper lip, which is just one of the effects of aging process. By injecting just the corners, the lips take on more of a lifted effect and the lips return to a more centered position. Dr. Bauer may also choose to inject the area around the lines with tiny amounts of Botox/Xeomin to help lift the area as well and prevent new lines from forming.

You have lost volume
Hyaluronic acid-based fillers, like Restylane or Belatero can be injected into the lips to add volume since they attract water to the area and swell the lips internally. They work great to define the lips and lip line, but, sometimes, they can look overdone if too much filler is used.

Going to a Doctor who has an esthetic vision is one of the best ways to avoid lips that look obviously injected.

Since the lips are one of the more delicate parts of the face, Dr. Bauer is sensitive to the issue and will always make sure our patients are comfortable before the procedure.

Some things to consider when thinking of getting fuller Lips:
For those who are in the market for a more perfect smile, porcelain veneers are the go-to method for those in a hurry and for a good reason too. That’s because they can help create a stunning smile (and major confidence boost) with teeth that are your preferred shape, size and shade. Now, many claim that there’s another unexpected benefit to veneers—fuller lips.

Cosmetic dentists are reporting that patients have recently been seeking out veneers as a way to augment their natural lip shape. The added thickness of the thin strip of porcelain placed over the teeth can push the lip out slightly to create a fuller, plumper look.

Experts say that this method is a great addition or alternative to injectable lip enhancement procedures. “I never thought about my lips as I had worn out, small and uneven teeth that did not support my lips. When I got my veneers, I get compliments on my lips looking fuller and fresher with my new smile”

I really want more lip volume—but I’m afraid to look like Daffy Duck or unnatural. What can I do to get a natural but plumper look?
You absolutely do not have to have that “duck lip” look. And here’s why … The lip has 15 distinct zones for injection. Each lip requires a different amount of filler in each of those 15 zones. No one has to—nor should they—have a lip that looks obviously filled.

I’m thinking of filler for my lips. Can you tell me what to expect?

Many of our patients say our lip treatments are their personal favorite. That’s because most get the results they want with minimal discomfort. Be sure to follow the pre-procedure patient instructions to minimize the chance of bruising, which can occur in a vascular area such as the lips. When you arrive for your treatment, you’ll receive an application of numbing medicine or a gentle dental anesthetic for complete comfort. Before beginning, Dr. Bauer will explain the procedure. Since some swelling will occur, we provide ice packs for you to use post-procedure. (Apply every 20 minutes for five hours and then again the next morning.) not require complete numbness. After two weeks, you’ll return for a follow up visit. While you will feel the gel in your lips at first, it becomes the same texture of your lips in one to two weeks.
